21 Seconds

On Memorial Day 2008, we are asked by our President for 21 seconds of remembrance at 3 pm in honor of our country's fallen soldiers. It is a call to step out of our routines to be mindful that the citizen benefits of United States' freedoms and liberties come at a price, paid with our military's own lives.

My hope is that I am deserving of their sacrifice.

My minister's sermon today reminded us that the Warrior archetype is necessary and honorable. Warriors, the kind of men that fill our armed services, have a divine calling to "represent physical strength and the ability to protect, defend and fight for one's rights." Our modern day warriors meet the uncertainties, challenges, risks and dangers that the Kings (political leaders), Healers (therapists), Judges (mediators), Dreamers (Socialists and Marxists) or Lovers (romantics) are ill equipped to meet and overcome. Left to the groups not of the Warrior class, our American way of life would end.

Earlier this year, the radical anti-war group Code Pink (Crones and Cowards) were treated first hand to the rightful place the Warrior has in society, including Berkeley. Reportedly, members of the group got into a verbal altercation with a man driving by the Berkeley protest. Medea Benjamin, the group's leader, sees the man getting out of his car then yells for help from the Marines they were protesting. She even put her arm around a Marine Vet counter-protestor in appreciation for their assistance. Unfortunately, the incident had no impact for within two months, they were hosting a "rally for Witches, Clowns and Sirens to cast spells and perform rituals" on Mother's Day. The irony of them self selecting the archetypes of Witches and Clowns is not lost on me and I dare say many in the Armed Services and their families would agree wholeheartedly with Code Pink's own descriptions of those who come out to protest them.

Jesus taught, "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends." -John 15:13. Even Jesus, especially Jesus, recognized the gift our fallen Warriors give to their bretheren on the battlefield and to these United States. Sadly, a many of our countrymen (Code Pink, in particular), under the protection of the Warrior, will never see this simple Truth.

Our Warriors who fight to the death become our Heroes, those that bring society something of great value to all. Their bravery and courage teach us about loyalty, selflessness and commitment to something greater than ourselves.

One last point about the archetypes...peace loving Artists and Advocates are not more valuable or intelligent than the Avengers and Saviors. They are all equals, each with their own contribution to make. Mothers have their place, as do the Knights. It is outside the accordance of laws of human consciousness and the soul to attempt to diminish or demonize the role of any of these timeless patterns of behavior. In our lifetimes, we all will be called to step into the many roles the archetypes represent. May we not be Pink Fools who find themselves also in the role of the Victim so they can learn to appreciate the role of the Rescuer.

The 21 seconds of remembrance is emblematic of the ceremonial military 21 gun salute. In those 21 seconds at 3 pm, I will give thanks to those who have fallen on behalf of this great nation, all the way back to the Revolutionary War. I will be grateful that our Warriors fight our enemies abroad so that I am free to go about my life in relative safety at home. I will pray that the families of our modern day wars know relief from their grief and acknowledge that their beloved soldiers died for something greater than themselves.

Doug's 60th In Pheonix

Doug's pre birthday celebration with the Newkirks and Aguirres at the house on the 14th. We grilled ribeyes. Maggie made salad with toasted almonds, feta and blueberries. Paul made a magazine worthy lemon meringue pie. Pictured under the arbor that overlooks our three lakes and San Antonio.

Our friend Scott Hitt wrote, "did you celebrate at the ranch or did she whisk you away on an adventure?" The answer is that we boarded a plane on Friday for Pheonix to attend the Jesse Cook concert!

The Buttes Marriott Resort
We set up residence in a hotel I once taught a seminar. This hotel is memorable to me because it is built around a big hill called a butte. It makes the most of the desert scenery. You feel as if you are not in the city...except of course for the Starbucks within walking distance and poolside service.

Chart House
We met up with former Supercuts associates, Mark and Pam Staples, for a delicious dinner. Doug and Mark spend their time discussing trades now as opposed to real estate for new stores.

T.C. Egginton's
We met Doug's cousin for brunch at this most fabulous eatery in Mesa. Jan looks healthy and happy and it was terrific to get to catch up with her.

Jesse Cook

The highlight of our trip, and Doug's gift, was a concert performed by Jesse Cook. We are great fans of his music and he did not disappoint. Phoenix is as close to TX as he will come this tour we believe, with others dates along the east and west coasts.

Book Bag
Poolside and on the plane, we even had some time to catch up on some reading!

Happy Birthday To Doug!

Watermelon

Sweet, juicy watermelons have arrived at our local markets. Doug and I have been enjoying them everyday for a couple of weeks now.

Watermelon was a favorite fruit of mine as a kid. We were usually served it in as a large wedge at the picnic table after bbqing. Today, just as years ago, I like watermelon's sweetness. I also love the beauty of the color of watermelon. Usually, Doug will carve our watermelons into chunks that we can later eat as a snack or add to a salad. Lately, my favorite way to serve watermelon is to juice it.

Watermelon has a high level of natural sugars, but it is loaded with nutritional qualities. In watermelon you will find Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron, Sodium, Potassium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Folic acid, Magnesium, and Zinc. Watermelon also contains high concentrations of Lycopene It can be enormously helpful in the detoxification process. It is a highly alkalzing food. Watermelon is a high-water-content fruit.

Watermelon became high on our list in spring and summer after visitng the Optimum Health Institute about a decade ago. As part of the detoxing fast and diet, watermelon juice was served. It was here that we learned about acidic/alkaline foods and that watermelon should figure prominently in a nutritional diet. Watermelon is also featured as a Superfood alternative to cancer fighting tomatoes.

Some of my favotire watermelon recipes are:

Watermelon Smoothie

4 cups watermelon chunks
2 cups strawberries or raspberries (I use frozen and omit ice)
1 banana

Blend a bit of watermelon until it liquifies. Add remaining ingredients. Blend until desired consistency is reached. Serve chilled.

News Cafe Salad

5 oz cottage cheese
1 cup watermelon cubes
1/2 c sliced strawberries
1/2 banana sliced
1/4 cup raisings
1/3 cup granola

Place cottage cheese in center of the bottom of a bowl. Surround with watermelon. Add sliced banana and watermelon on top. Top with granola and raisins.

Watermelon Margaritas

1/3 cup Orange liqueur
1/4 cup Triple Sec
3/4 cup Patron or other Tequila
Watermelon
Lime
Sugar

Add liquor to blender. Fill blender with watermelon and liquify. Chill beverage or frost glasses. Wet rim of glasses with water or lime slice. Dip glasses in sugar. Serve with squeeze of lime and lime wedge.

May Days

This latest posting is likely to be more interesting my friends and family than to those of you who are gracious readers. Here's what I am up to this month...

Unity Women's Retreat in Leaky, TX

I attended the 2nd annual retreat last weekend with 13 other attendees. The retreat's theme was "creativity". The highlight for me was the music of Janet O' Connor. She has an upcoming album entitled Strawberry Fields, which she performed to open the retreat. During our creative time, Janet lead volunteers in song and taught us how to drum. Well, "taught" might be stretching it. She was joined by Jenna and Josh to lead a drum circle at sunset at the riverbank. Not an activity I would usually sign up for, it was an uplifting experience. After dinner, Janet, Jenna and Josh played gypsy music as we twirled on a makeshift dance floor. Gypsy flavored music was a surprise. It was a unique treat since I had brought a Turkish scarf with silver coins. I was thrilled to try out some of my new bellydancing moves.

Mother's Day With My Daughter

I will leave this Friday to spend the weekend with Jessica in Athens. We're leaving Doug behind. Spa treatments, Sunday brunch, gossip and the chick flick, Made Of Honor, are on the schedule.

Birthday Celebration with Jesse Cook

Doug and I are great fans of music and flamenco guitar in particular. Jesse Cook is an extraordinary Rumba Flamenco artist. So much so that we are jumping on a plane to Pheonix simply because he is playing there! He has a new cd out, Frontiers. We'll catch up with old Supercuts associates, The Staples, and our cousin, Jan. Oh, and it's Doug's birthday.

Concert with Rajamani with Andalusi dancer, Elisa Rodriguez

My Andalusi dance teacher will be holding a special performance with her musical partner at my San Antonio studio. After treating the public to a complimentary Final Friday Andalusi class, Elisa will don her stage attire to accompany Rajamani. I am very much looking forward to the class and the concert.

And...

The Pilates Room At Synergy is paying the rent and then some, I am happy to say. I will hold anoter series of Pilates For Stylists classes. I have added Superslow strength training to balance my pilates work, first introduced to me by Chauncey and Shirah Bell. I was the star of a Lululemon Ambassador photo shoot. We're having a party for Doug with the Newkirks and Aguirres. I'm putting the final touches on the Charleston Girls Getaway for the first weekend in June.

Merry May to you!
